MES
partners with the Maryland Department of the
Environment (MDE) on both tire cleanup and
demonstration projects.
Funding
for the program is obtained from the Maryland
Used Tire Cleanup and Recycling Fund, upon
project approval from the Board of Public
Works. Funding is distributed to MES by
MDE.
The
fund is generated from the collection of a
80¢ fee on the sale of each new tire in the
state.

MES'
role in the state-wide cleanup effort has been
to hire and oversee the operations of the
contractors for state-mandated cleanups, and
to look for and implement creative uses for
scrap tires.
Since
the inception of the program 12 years ago, MES
has cleaned up 22 stockpiles involving the
removal of more than 2 million tires. MES
has managed 35 demonstration projects ranging
from tire playgrounds to sound barriers to
landfill covers and liners.
