To accommodate the complete energy needs of the Eastern Correctional Institution in Somerset County, MD, MES operates and maintains a co-generation facility that burns wood chips to create low-pressure steam, high temperature hot water, and electricity to the Delmarva Power & Light Company.

The four-megawatt plant uses two Cleaver-Brooks water tube D-type package boilers to create power. These boilers can use both wood chips and number two oil.

To find out more about the power plant, you can visit the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Power Plant Research Web site.
