NEWS: Maryland Chooses Rubberized Asphalt for Road Improvement Project from Scrap Tire News

Berlin Scrap Tire Walking Path
A rubberized walking path was installed at the Stephen Decatur Park in the Town of Berlin, MD.  The base of the path is made up of shredded scrap tires.  Approximately 2,900 used tires were recycled for this project.  Sureplay Rubber Surfacing International, LLC installed the path.

Playgrounds
Working with the state public school construction program and MD Department of Natural Resources (DNR), MDE and MES have funded improvements for playgrounds across the state.  Recycled tire materials have been used for surfacing and wear mats in man projects.  The safety surfacing helps cut down on injuries and maintenance costs.  DNR has 10 scrap tire playgrounds funded through a beneficial use project.

Rubberized Natural Grass Athletic Fields
MDE funded the use of crumb rubber as a top-dressing for existing natural grass athletic fields at Frederick Community College.  The use of crumb rubber as an in-fill is reported to reduce the number and severity of injuries.

Rubber Modified Asphalt
Adding fine crumb rubber to asphalt increases the life span of a roadway or parking lot.  Only a few sites exist in Maryland as cities, counties and the MD Department of Transportation get exposed to this beneficial use of recycled tires.

Tire Derived Aggregate - Landfill and Civil Engineering
Working with MDE, MES has created a guide for the use of Tire-Derived Aggregate (TDA) in landfills and other civil engineering uses.  Included in this .pdf document are technical specifications and engineering guidance for the use of TDA.

Citizen Scrap Tire Drop-Off Day
MES has conducted seven events since 1998, resulting in the collection of over 9,109 tons of scrap tires, equivalent to 911,000 passenger tires.  The program allows participating residents to dispose of ten scrap tires free of charge at their local landfill.
