Working To
Eliminate Odors At Your Landfill
Landfill
Gas
Landfill
gas is created by the anaerobic decomposition of waste
that is buried in landfills.
The composition of landfill gas is dependant on the
type of waste but typically is comprised of about 50 %
methane and 50 % carbon dioxide, and less than 1 %
sulfides.
What causes
the odor?
Sulfides
are the source of the "rotting" smell often
noticed near landfills and can cause unpleasant odors even
at very low concentrations.
Methane
and carbon dioxide are odorless. Odors can be destroyed by
collecting and flaring the landfill gas.
Midshore and the old Easton landfill utilize a
system consisting of gas collection wells and thirty-six
flares to collect and burn the landfill gas.
(See
Diagram)
In
addition to minimizing odors, burning the gas helps to
prevent gas migration and reduce harmful emissions to the
atmosphere. Midshore
landfill staff perform daily inspections of all 36 flares
to ensure that they are performing properly.
Good
Neighbor Policy
Because
of the operational nature of landfills, the products they
receive and weather variations such as temperature
inversions, it is virtually impossible to eliminate all
odors. However, MES
staff does everything possible, within reason, to make
sure that this does not occur.
We
are available to respond to odor complaints 24 hours a
day. If you should experience odors at your home that you
think are related to Midshore, please contact us at (410)
820-8383 during normal business hours and at (800)
669-7080 after hours, and a representative from MES will
contact you to assist with your concerns.
