Scrap Tire Program

Maryland Environmental Service (MES) works for the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) on both state-financed tire clean-up and tire demonstration projects. Funding for the program is obtained from the Maryland Used Tire Cleanup and Recycling Fund, and is distributed to MES by MDE.

MES's role in the state-wide cleanup effort has been to hire and oversee the operations of the contractors for state-mandated cleanups, and to look for and implement creative uses for the recovered tires. Since implementation of the program five years ago, MES has cleaned up eight major stockpiles involving the removal of 1.63 million tires and has done thirteen demonstration projects ranging from tire playgrounds to tire reefs to landfill liners and covers, involving the equivalent of 3.65 million passenger car tires.
