The Maryland Environmental Service (MES) has been the regional leader in compost production and sales since the late seventies. MES, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) worked together to develop an environmentally sound method for disposal of biosolids extracted from wastewater.

In the mid-eighties, the Maryland Environmental Service introduced Leafgro®, an organic compost product. Leafgro® is produced by composting leaves and grass clippings diverted from local landfills. This operation utilizes organic wastes to produce an excellent soil conditioner which in turn, preserves valuable landfill space for wastes that can not be recycled. Leafgro® is used by landscape professionals and homeowners whose landscapes reap the benefits of this fine product.
