About MES

What is MES?
The Maryland Environmental Service (MES), created in 1970, is an agency of the State of Maryland and a public corporation that provides a wide range of environmental management services to public and private entities. MES is required to provide its services on a fee-for-service basis. MES operates as a not-for-profit corporation and receives no direct state appropriation.

MES Vision Statement
The Maryland Environmental Service commits itself to protecting and improving the environment for the citizens of Maryland by providing innovative, responsive, and cost-effective environmental management services to Maryland’s local governments, state agencies, and private entities.

MES Mission
The Maryland Environmental Service assists with the preservation, improvement and management of the quality of air, land and water resources. MES provides dependable, effective and efficient water supply and purification; disposal of liquid and solid wastes; reductions in the amount of waste generated and discharged into the environment; and the generation of energy from and recovery of wastes. In response to its mandate from the General Assembly, the Maryland Environmental Service creates leading edge and standard-setting programs to solve difficult environmental problems for all levels of government and the private sector. The Service develops private-public partnerships and creates markets for future private sector involvement. MES combines the public sector’s commitment to environmental protection with the private sector’s efficiencies, flexibility and responsiveness.
